Catacomb is a domain of those expelled from the order of the surface, beings forsaken by society, consigned to the existence of the ‘inhuman’โ€•whether cast into it, embracing it, or burdened with it as an inexorable fate.โ€• They exist outside the networks of the surface, communicating and surviving in their own way. Seohyun Ji has described Catacomb as where life and death intertwine, existing without any vertical hierarchy. The persecuted Christian is both the ‘human who serves the noble God in heaven’ and the ‘being denied humanity’ by the ‘earthly humans.’ The hierarchy of existence may seem distinct in the vertical relationship between the surface and the underground, but in reality, it is tenuously maintained by the silence of faith’s uncertainty. And in that silence, violence against the unseenโ€•women, the disabled, the queer, refugees, and all those whose names are unknownโ€•is ignored and legitimized.
