Yongjae Lee would often use the phrase "to draw after" or "to draw a copy of". In the casualness with which he utters the phrase, one might sense a direct, almost disarming candor and a certain degree of cautiousness at the same time. To "draw after" something implies the prior existence of a concrete subject before the image created by the artist. These subjects range from the Joseon dynasty ink paintings and architectural forms to traditional East Asian portraits, as well as paintings and photographs situated within Western art history — primarily images he first encountered online. While he often chooses historical artifacts or artworks bearing institutional and historical authority as the basis of his work, he also turns to images circulating across the internet, detached from their original contexts.
His process of "drawing after" follows a specific set of processes. Lee closely examines the works of others by enlarging them into individual pixels, dissecting them in detail before extracting a section or effect to transplant into his own works. He breaks images down into units of lines and spots according to what he needs, selecting and juxtaposing them with precision. As a result, fragments of adopted images drift away from their original contexts and emerge into unexpected times and spaces, much like the circulation of digital images themselves. This mode of selection does not lead to is crude clipping or collage, but to a meticulously constructed painting surface. Brownish layers, as though coated with grease and age, overlay the elongated skulls of beasts and portraits of immortals with a fabricated temporality. Within this temporal field, digital images that may once have functioned as empty signs begin to appear like uncanny symbols, while historically charged traditional images — such as Joseon dynasty's Daoist figure paintings or landscape paintings — are reduced to icon-like forms, almost like removable stickers. Regardless of their distinct origins, the two kinds of images arrive on equal footing upon the surface the artist constructs.
It is never immediately clear if the artist is commemorating, celebrating, damaging, or contaminating the subjects of his works. This opacity of intention sustains the tension in the experience of viewing Lee's work. The artist recently began to draw fragments from his own earlier works. Lightning and darkness, clouds and sky, skin and red tattoos — motifs that once existed together within a single painting or landscape are now divided and dispersed across separate surfaces in this presentation. His focus shifts to even smaller units, and the scope of observation magnifies and grows immersive. Through this method, Lee's paintings possess a force and attitude distinct from impulses of spontaneous outpouring or meditation. He memorizes the strokes of artistic legacies he seeks to follow. He trains his body in the techniques used to render light and darkness in the 1700s Joseon paintings, then articulates them in 2020s Seoul, as though practicing the pronunciation of a foreign language. Only when he has grasped that foreign language in his mouth long enough to bend and maneuver it with the fluency of a native tongue does it finally transfer onto the painted surface.
The reason the artist's paintings tend toward abstraction despite the specificity of their subjects lies in their continual fragmentation. In Lee's previous solo show, a painting of a dragon emerging through clouds appeared in the work Diptych ‹이폭병 (二幅屛)› (2024). Derived from the traditional Korean Unryongdo (운룡도), or the ※dragon and clouds§ painting motif, the image reappears in the current exhibition dispersed into separate elements: clouds, darkness/sky, lightning, and a dragon. The artist expands the effects of each image derived from the previous work, transplanting them onto canvases of different scales — as though relocating them onto foreign soil. Such shifts or migrations occur repeatedly throughout his process: once from the temporal and spatial conditions of Joseon into those of contemporary Korea; once from the medium of ink and East Asian paintings into oil and Western paintings; and and once again from two rectangular panels into four irregularly scaled canvases.
His works now displaced far from their origin are accompanied by a group of blackboard paintings beside them. Lee's Chilpan ‹칠판(漆板)› (2024), painted in reference to the Blackboard Tableau series by the Latvian-born American artist Vija Celmins, bears the faintly inscribed word Geukgi 극기 ("self-discipline") in place of an empty blackboard. The blackboard as an object, Celmins's blackboards, and Lee's blackboards differ in material, surface treatment, and modes of installation, and yet are visually very similar. In the 2026 blackboard paintings of now present, "empty" surfaces. Certain marks resemble meaningless traces or scribbles. Yet just as the artist had to densely fill the surface in order to convey emptiness, every mark is precisely a place touched by brush and paint so that it might appear exactly as it does. Emptiness and meaninglessness, intention and gesture, are all layered upon the black surface. Installed in close proximity to the artist's brown, earthy-toned paintings, the blackboard works appear almost like devices that annotate or direct attention toward them.
The mystical has often been claimed as the position of the marginalized, or as a superstitious and decolonial language. When such a perception or belief becomes self-evident, it functions at once as a possibility and a constraint. If there is someone who seeks to wield the mystical apart from those already marked by stigma, that figure would surely be a subject composed of countless citations. A subject constructed through citation discovers ways of speaking that do not rely on a fixed identity. Lee's dragons, immortals, lights, clouds, darkness, and water are not singular forms in themselves, but motifs that, through authority and repetition, became naturalized as the visual language of a particular era. The artist appears intent on summoning precisely this sensation of a natural language. Conscious of the anachronism and mortality embedded within traditional motifs and compositions, he gathers not the subjects themselves so much as their modes of expression and their effects, compiling them into his own lexicon to be retrieved and deployed as needed. For this reason, it no longer feels strange that works belonging to different terrains, eras, media, and palettes coexist side by side within his exhibitions.
I suspect that the mystical that Lee seeks to engage resides in moments that produce a profound sense of strangness: the event of a young Asian person encountering the very notion of "the world" for the first time1; the moment when expressions of light and darkness through ink painting no longer register as reality; or the point at which systems of belief surrounding vividness and "representation" can no longer return to what they once were. To reach this threshold, the artist uses his pictorial surface as a site for concrete imagination of what preceded it, and simultaneously as a place that reactivates such strangeness anew. Strangeness, after all, is the opening through which one approaches the mystical.

Yongjae Lee's practice explores the structure and temporality of painting. He speaks about painting through painting, creating paintings that represent other paintings. Drawing on Eastern and Western art histories, printed reproductions, and digital images as points of reference, he explores the grammar of painting and the conditions through which it takes shape. Lee regards tradition not as a fixed past, but as a heritage continuously formed and reformed through specific historical and cultural contexts. By citing and repositioning images from different periods and sources, he establishes new relationships between them and attends to what he describes as the “post-original state,” constructing narratives that extend beyond representation. His work is grounded in the methodology of the meta-picture, borrowing and transforming the structures of earlier paintings and the imagery of others. Through this process, painting becomes an ongoing conversation and a sustained field of research.
