Inertality, Àngels Miralda

A body lies flat on the forensic table. Clean white walls and a cold metallic ground separate it from its unspecified extraction site. Based on the evidence, this must have been a place both abandoned and vibrant, like the trail of any mammal that moves through a forest. Thistles stick to fur and fine hairs get loose on brambles, suggesting the occurrence of life’s cyclical dance for survival. Can something lie on the forensic table that is still teeming with life? The body lies open for investigation, yet information still travels to and fro via its nervous system, and life swells between protective curved ribs, carried by blue and red oxygenated copper veins.

Known for their sculptural assemblages ripe with science-fiction imaginary based in a post-pollution present, Inside Job’s material and conceptual work proposes a reckoning with a changing planetary chemistry. Symbols inspired by ancient botanical manuscripts and art nouveauesque forms combine natural and industrial elements to create a new codex of interpretability for a post-exposure society. The newest works combine forms sourced from the decaying tankers off of Athens’ Elefsina industrial port and the surroundings of the artists’ studio in the outskirts of Poznań. Rusting tankers float on the calm Aegean with visible rust and weather damage, industrial gears and machines lay weather-beaten and covered with the overgrowth of organic lattices. These diverse geographies are connected through a network of industrial peripheries in which abandonment creates new forms of aesthetic cohesions.

The remains and cross-sections of these colossal remains form the anchor of this exhibition in a series of sculptural ribs titled Interstices (2026). They appear as curved spear-like metallic cuts that curve outwards from floor or wall-based positions. They are named after the central protective bone of torsos that are also used to construct the cargo-holds of ships in the form of rib-shaped wood or metallic beams that radiate out from a central spine. These forms exist to protect a hollow - the organs and the life they maintain, as well as precious cargo and in the construction of aircraft fuselage. At the same time, they serve as the blood cells of global industry, transporting goods around the globe in a constant cycle of delivery. Around them, black rubber cables drop into heaps swirling around the floor. Copper runs through them, an electronic circulatory system that transmits energy where needed.

Beyond this, a large-scale fabric work titled Membrane (2026) acts as a separator and protective biofilm between sections. On transparent textile sewn through with organza seams, gear-like and botanical references appear on an airy boundary that both separates and allows for visibility across space. These porous fragments are collaged, no longer resembling their initial bodies but digested and processed through digital software and developed into new symbols. The membranes create a spatial body without organs - Deleuze and Guattari’s non-hierarchical system of distribution that constitutes the ultimate state of deterritorialization. They hold and embalm air rather than the individual parts that make up this decentered body, claiming space itself as an additional element in this arrangement of laid-out interconnected network. Rather than creating a system of an inside and outside, they maintain an openness that rejects closed systems in favour of the planetary assemblage.

Following on the metabolized images that appear on taut fabric, rough strings snag onto cut metallic sculptural forms in the series Entwined (2026). They produce accidental spider-like webs that run through slender hanging sculptures constituted by interwoven sharpnesses of blade and dried blue thistle. The forensic analysis fails. Rather than identifying a cause of death, the viewer is inside of a living organism. It is not the body that has failed, but rather, an antiquated binary between life and death, the natural and the man-made, the pure and the contaminated. Each element of this installation contains a tension between the inertness of its elements and material immortality. Matter can neither be created nor destroyed, but it can be processed, digested, and chemically altered by planetary systems that crush, recombine, and create new matter out of the old.

Inside Job creates a corporeal reckoning with our contemporary environmental inheritance. Light and heavy textiles contain images from silkscreen prints, echoing the industrial advances and complex machines that have built a global, deterritorialized economy. Cargo vessels are the red blood cells that keep this material flow moving through commercial channels and trade routes across the world.This history of human exploitation, environmental evolution, and the development of industrial technology is not a part of the past, but firmly anchored in the present as the rust-clad sides of giant tankers, and skeletal remains of shipwrecks that inhabit the peripheral shores of manufacturing hubs. Their existence traces a dislocated and global picture of contemporary industrial aftermath. Lying flat, dissected, yet breathing is a global network of distributed parts. A worldwide body without organs connects to the central needs of an economy hungry for accumulation. Organs decay and recombine into new forms for survival.

한 몸이 검시대 위에 평평하게 누워 있다. 깨끗한 흰 벽과 차가운 금속 바닥은 이 몸을 어디인지 알 수 없는 추출 장소로부터 분리한다. 남겨진 흔적으로 미루어 보건대, 그곳은 버려진 동시에 생명으로 충만한 장소였을 것이다. 마치 숲을 가로지르는 포유류가 지나간 자리처럼 말이다. 엉겅퀴는 털에 달라붙고 가느다란 털은 가시덤불에 걸려 떨어져 나가며, 생존을 위한 생명의 순환적 춤이 그곳에서 벌어졌음을 암시한다. 여전히 생명으로 들끓는 무언가가 검시대 위에 놓일 수 있을까? 몸은 조사를 위해 열린 채 누워 있지만, 정보는 여전히 신경계를 따라 이리저리 오간다. 생명은 푸르고 붉은 산소화된 구리 혈관에 실려, 몸을 보호하는 휘어진 갈비뼈 사이에서 부풀어 오른다.

인사이드잡은 오염 이후의 현재를 배경으로 SF적 상상력이 풍부한 조각 아상블라주 작업을 이어왔다. 그들의 물질적·개념적 작업은 변화하는 지구의 화학적 환경을 직시하도록 한다. 고대 식물학 필사본에서 영감을 받은 기호와 아르누보풍의 형태는 자연적 요소와 산업적 요소를 결합하며, 오염에 노출된 이후의 사회를 해석하기 위한 새로운 기호 체계를 만들어낸다. 최근 작업에서는 아테네 엘레프시나 산업항 앞바다에서 부식되어가는 유조선과 포즈난 외곽에 위치한 작가들의 스튜디오 주변에서 가져온 형태들이 결합된다.잔잔한 에게해 위에는 녹이 슬고 풍화된 유조선들이 떠 있다. 산업용 기어와 기계들은 비바람에 마모된 채 격자처럼 자라난 유기물에 뒤덮여 있다. 서로 멀리 떨어진 이 장소들은 산업 주변부의 네트워크를 통해 연결되며, 그곳에서 방치는 새로운 형태의 미학적 결속을 만들어낸다.

이 거대한 산업 구조물의 잔해와 단면은 갈비뼈 형태의 조각 연작 'Interstices' (2026)를 통해 이번 전시의 중심축을 이룬다. 작품은 바닥이나 벽에서 바깥으로 뻗어 나오는, 창처럼 휘어진 금속 구조의 형태로 나타난다. 작품의 명칭은 몸통의 중심부를 보호하는 갈비뼈에서 비롯된다. 갈비뼈와 유사한 구조는 선박에서도 찾아볼 수 있다. 선박의 화물칸 역시 척추와 같은 중앙 축에서 갈비뼈처럼 뻗어나가는 목재나 금속 빔으로 구성된다. 이러한 구조는 내부의 빈 공간을 감싸고 그 안에 있는 것을 보호한다. 신체에서는 장기와 생명을, 선박에서는 귀중한 화물을 보호하며, 항공기의 동체에도 이와 유사한 구조가 사용된다. 동시에 선박은 세계 산업의 혈구처럼 끊임없이 순환하며 전 세계로 상품을 실어 나른다. 그 주변에는 검은 고무 케이블이 아래로 늘어져 바닥 위에 소용돌이치듯 쌓인다. 케이블 안으로는 구리가 흐르며, 필요한 곳으로 에너지를 전달하는 전자적 순환계를 이룬다.

이어 대형 직물 작업 'Membrane' (2026)은 공간을 구획하는 동시에 그 사이를 보호하는 생물막으로 기능한다. 오간자 이음새로 이어 붙인 투명한 직물 위에는 톱니바퀴와 식물을 연상시키는 형상들이 나타난다. 가볍고 투과적인 이 경계는 공간을 나누면서도 그 너머를 볼 수 있게 한다. 이러한 형상의 파편들은 콜라주되고, 디지털 소프트웨어를 통해 소화되고 가공되면서 본래의 모습을 잃고 새로운 기호로 변형된다. 이 막은 공간 안에 ‘기관 없는 신체(body without organs)’를 만들어낸다. 이는 탈영토화의 궁극적 상태를 이루는 들뢰즈와 가타리의 비위계적인 분포 체계다. 이 막은 신체의 개별 기관 대신 공기를 품고 보존한다. 이로써 공간 자체가 서로 연결된 네트워크를 이루는 하나의 요소가 된다. 이 막은 내부와 외부를 분리하기보다 열린 상태를 유지하며, 닫힌 체계가 아닌 행성적 아상블라주(planetary assemblage)를 지향한다.

앞서 팽팽한 직물 위의 이미지가 대사 과정을 거쳤다면, 'Entwined' (2026) 연작에서는 거친 실이 절단된 금속 구조물에 걸려든다. 이 실은 칼날처럼 날카로운 금속과 말린 푸른 엉겅퀴가 뒤얽힌 가느다란 조각을 가로지르며, 우연히 거미줄 같은 형태를 만들어낸다. 법의학적 분석은 실패한다. 사인을 밝혀내는 대신, 관람자는 살아 있는 유기체 안에 들어와 있음을 깨닫는다. 실패한 것은 신체가 아니라 생과 사, 자연과 인공, 순수한 것과 오염된 것을 가르는 낡은 이분법이다. 설치를 이루는 각각의 요소에는 비활성(inertness)과 물질적 불멸성(immortality) 사이의 긴장이 내재한다. 물질은 생성되지도 소멸하지도 않는다. 다만 기존의 물질을 부수고 다시 결합해 새로운 물질을 만들어내는 행성적 시스템을 통해 가공되고, 소화되고, 화학적으로 변형될 수 있다.

인사이드잡은 오늘날 우리가 물려받은 환경적 유산을 신체를 통해 마주하게 한다. 서로 다른 물성의 직물 위에 새겨진 실크스크린 이미지는 전 지구적이고 탈영토화된 경제를 구축해온 산업 기술의 발전과 복잡한 기계 장치들을 연상시킨다. 화물선은 전 세계의 상업망과 무역로를 따라 물질의 흐름을 이어가는 적혈구와 같다. 인간의 착취와 환경의 변화, 산업 기술의 발전이 축적되어 온 역사는 과거에 머물지 않는다. 거대한 유조선의 녹슨 표면과 생산 거점 주변 해안에 남겨진 난파선의 골격은 그 역사가 현재에도 굳건히 자리하고 있음을 보여준다. 이들의 존재는 세계 곳곳에 흩어진 산업화의 여파를 하나의 전 지구적 풍경으로 드러낸다. 평평하게 누워 해부된 채로도 여전히 숨 쉬고 있는 것은, 세계 곳곳에 분산된 요소들로 이루어진 하나의 전 지구적 네트워크다. ‘기관 없는 신체’는 끊임없는 축적을 요구하는 경제와 연결되어 있다. 기관은 부패하고 다시 결합하며, 생존을 위한 새로운 형태로 거듭난다.

Ula Lucińska and Michał Knychaus are visual artists based in Poznań, Poland, working as the artist duo Inside Job. Their joint practice focuses on the processes of sedimentation and accumulation, life-bearing systems, and identity construction within the context of dynamic changes such as the climate crisis, technological acceleration, political shifts and growing anxiety about the impending unknown. Many of their projects refer to catastrophic scenarios in which the hauntings from the past and futuristic speculations are intertwined—incorporating fiction as methodology, they explore its self-fulfilling potential, forecasting dystopias and utopias to examine their limitations and possibilities.

Inside Job received the 2nd Hana Future Art Award (2026) and the Młoda Polska Scholarship (2026). They were shortlisted for the International Allegro Prize (2020); finalists in the International Artagon IV competition in Paris (2018); and recipients of the Poznań Artistic Scholarship (2023), the Poznań City Award for Emerging Artists (2020), the Prize of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (2018), and the Santander Universidades Prize (2016). Selected solo exhibitions include: eastcontemporary, Milan, IT; FUTURA, Prague, CZ; Cantina, Aarhus, DK; Hot Wheels Projects, Athens, GR; Šopa Gallery, Kosice, SK; BSMNT, Leipzig, DE; 66P Gallery, Wrocław, PL; Pawilon, Poznań, PL; SKALA, Poznań, PL. They have been selected to participate as part of the Polish Pavilion at the 16th Gwangju Biennale, opening in September 2026.

울라 루친스카(Ula Lucińska)와 미하우 크니하우스(Michał Knychaus)는 아티스트 듀오 ‘인사이드 잡(Inside Job)’으로 활동한다. 이들의 작업은 퇴적과 축적의 과정, 생명 유지 시스템, 그리고 기후 위기와 기술의 가속, 정치적 변화, 다가오는 미지에 대한 불안이 심화되는 시대 속에서 형성되는 정체성의 문제를 탐구한다. 이들의 프로젝트는 과거의 잔재와 미래적 추측이 뒤얽힌 재난적 시나리오를 자주 다루며, 허구를 하나의 방법론으로 활용해 그것이 현실을 예견하고 스스로 실현하는 가능성을 탐색한다. 이를 통해 디스토피아와 유토피아를 상상하며, 각각의 한계와 가능성을 질문한다.

인사이드 잡은 제2회 하나 퓨처 아트 어워드 (2026)와 Młoda Polska Scholarship (2026)를 수상했으며, 국제 알레그로 프라이즈 (2020) 최종 후보, 파리 국제 아르타공 IV 공모전(2018) 파이널리스트로 선정되었다. 또한 포즈난 예술 장학금(2023), 포즈난 신진예술가상 (2020), 폴란드 문화유산부 장관상 (2018), 산탄데르 대학교상 (2016)을 수상했다. 주요 개인전은 eastcontemporary (밀라노), FUTURA (프라하), Cantina (오르후스), Hot Wheels Projects (아테네), Šopa Gallery (코시체), BSMNT (라이프치히), 66P Gallery (브로츠와프), Pawilon (포즈난), SKALA (포즈난) 등에서 개최되었다. 또한 2026년 9월 개막하는 제16회 광주비엔날레 폴란드관 참여 작가로 선정되었다.
